Recently, I had a conversation with an auto mechanic, who refused to be named in this article, so let us call him Max. He gave me the most interesting inside story of the car repair industry. Max has been getting his hands greased for no less than 30 years have been around for a long time in this car industry.

Max admits that even though the auto industry has been mending its ways, there are still some errant mechanics who replace used parts in peoples cars and sell them as new.

I would say years ago, it was more pars for the course. I would say it happened about 40 percent of the time, he said. Today, I would say it probably happens a whole heck of a lot less. You’re probably looking at about 10 to 7 percent margin, but it does still happen.

Shady Auto Mechanics and their activities

Max has couple of things to suggest as you search for a good car repair shop. The first one is the appropriate Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification from places as AC Delco, Ford Motor Company or Bendix. “While ASE certification does not indicate that they’re really good, it does indicate that the technicians go on their own time, or the business has given them the incentive to study, to take the course and go and show their skills are worthy of certification.” (Ed. A shop that has invested in the proper equipment to service today’s automobiles is usually a shop that you can trust, because they are not going to buy that expensive equipment and then have people who are not qualified to use it.”

According to Max cleanliness of the car repair shop is equally important. Max says, “I’m looking for a clean shop. I don’t want to see Jake the Junkyard Dog chained in the office. I don’t want to see a lot of dirt around the place. It shouldn’t look like it’s going to be condemned by the health department.”

Elderly Woman: Oh, at 5 o’clock.

Mechanic: Good. Then I’ll know what time to tell my kids to get off the street because I shudder to think of you driving down the street in this car with my children playing in the street because you’re driving a death trap and it could kill them.

“Well needless to say the poor little old lady, just shy of a heart attack, started crying and saying, ‘Just do it, fix it, do whatever you have to do!’ And this is the type of tactic this guy used.” Although Max said these situations don’t happen as often as they use to, but there are instances where mechanics use such unscrupulous tactics.

Plain inquiries

Having been around for more than 30 years, Max has seen quite a few situations that are very annoying. I asked him about few things that customers do which gets to him and pat came the reply, People who are shopping auto repair prices.

A hypothetical situation Max explained it with: people call up now and then inquiring about the cost for a tune-up, when in reality they don’t have a slightest idea what is wrong with their car. Max finds some conversations with certain customers very unpleasant. Can you make me a deal? is another question from the customers that annoys Max the most. This does not mean that he does not help those who are really in need of help and are not just out to score a discount.

For example, he would go out of his way to help out a pregnant woman with two kids and car trouble and not enough money to fix it. Max told me, I’m going to the ends of the Earth, to the gates of hell for that woman to get that car running as reasonably as I possibly can and still maintain a profit for my business.” He insists that his business is not a charitable organization even while lending a helping hand to people who are in dire need of fixing their cars but are unable to pay the required amount.”I don’t wear a white collar and consequently, I can’t stay in business if I give away everything I do.”

Keep faith to win Points

Some of Max’s favorite customers are those who trust him implicitly with his job. They just drop their cars and let Max take care of the car repair. They are the one who don’t expect you to give them an estimate or ask how much it would cost. They simply trust Max, his knowledge and skill as an auto mechanic, to get the car back in ship shape condition and ready to roll on the road. “And I never breached that trust,” Max said.

In return for the trust placed in him, Max tries to adjust his booked schedule to squeeze these customers in and let them out the same day. “I took care of him. Did I give him a discount? No … did I do everything I could to get him back on the road as quickly as possible? You’re damn right I did. And I did it over, say the guy who came in an hour before and said, ‘Can you make me a deal?”

Consider these numbers: $1500 for an insignificant scratch on the bodywork; $3500 for a new exhaust valve; at least $150 for a new trunk-release switch cover. These aren’t figures from the realm of fantasy, but actual repair expenses that drivers have provided to AOL Autos after having coughed up these amounts for repair jobs that only seemed small. The alternative is to do the job yourself, or buy a new car. That seems extreme, right? So just pay up like a good citizen and suffer in silence, seems to be the mantra.

Beyond the Bumper

Deana May, at Los Angeles-based AC Auto finishing, is aware of the surprises a store has for even a car brought in with just a minor scratch. According to May, “It’s a scary thing — looks can be deceiving. You can do an estimate on a front bumper then take it off and behind it there’s all kinds of damage. Low-profile cars with low-profile tires go over a bump or up a driveway, they don’t take an angle, often they need a whole new front end.” In addition, problems of these types arrive frequently at her shop. Last month a Lotus driver was billed a sum of $5,400 for his car repairing; however, after verifying the condition she had to agree. Mark Essig, a writer in a small town in North Carolina, says he was shocked when a local technician charged him $150 to replace a missing cover for the trunk-release switch in his ten-year-old Mercedes 320 CLK. And while Essig was expecting a reasonably expensive repair bill given that he owned an upscale European make, he was certainly not expecting a $150-add on to a $2,000 repair bill, particularly since it came as an additional cost that was not included in the original estimate. He says: It was part of a $2000 repair bill that included valve cleaning and brake work, and I was so sick to my stomach that I couldn’t quibble over $150. Best part was, I didn’t ask him to do it. Meanwhile, Michael Russell, an AOL Autos friend who owns a Porsche 944, found out to his dismay that an old-school German car could cost more than he had budgeted for. A $15 exhaust valve replacement eventually cost him $3,500 once labor had been factored in. Essentially, he says, they had to take out the engine to reach the valve, which had burned out, a common failing in older performance vehicles. But without the repair, he says, he had no way of traveling to work.

Cool Conditioning, Not-So-Cool Cost

This is a first-hand experience. I took my wife’s 1995 Nissan 240SX S-ER to my local mechanics to fix the air conditioning. However, Id already taken it into the shop the week before, to be told about a leaking gasket that had depressurized the system. So they fixed the gasket, re-filled the system with Freon coolant and pressurized it, for a paltry $300. I thought Id got off lightly, until two days later, when the system began blowing hot once again. At the shop, they told me another seal had broken, but it more complicated this time, meaning extra labor. When I was handed an estimate of $800, I pointed out that the original fix was under warranty, and my mechanic agreed but pointed out in turn that a different component had was to blame this time and therefore the warranty was not valid in this case. Having failed to negotiate a lower repair cost, Im poorer by $300, and my wife faces the prospect of a long, hot summer. Lesson learnt: get a second opinion, and evaluate general system integrity when replacing individual components on older-model cars.

Coolant Chills

Ken Lavacot of www.2carpros.com advises you to never ignore little signs. A bit of steam coming out of the exhaust may seem like nothing, but it could be a warning of huge repair bills. For example, he says, “Coolant is normally used to cool the engine, but if coolant gets into the combustion chamber, the engine will burn it, generating white smoke and steam.” Among the expensive solutions is gasket replacement. “If the gasket that seals the intake manifold to the cylinder head fails it lets coolant into the intake port and then the combustion chamber. In which case, the intake manifold will need to be removed.” And getting to the gasket and reassembling the parts once it is replaced is the expensive bit. If there is coolant in the combustion chamber but the gasket is functioning, Lavacot says the engine must be taken apart. He adds: “This can be tricky because it is difficult to tell what is causing the problem. For example: A repair shop has told you the cylinder head is cracked, and as they start disassembly they can discover it was the intake manifold gasket that has failed. An honest repair shop will inform the customer that the repair bill will be lower. Or the opposite can happen. A repair shop may tell you that your engine has a blown head gasket, but once the disassembly is complete they inform you that the head gasket is fine, and so is the cylinder, which has been pressure checked. This only leaves the engine block as the failure and must be replaced, and that can be costly.”

Paintwork Mess

My brother-in-law lent his Jaguar convertible to a family member a couple of years back. But disaster struck when the car was returned with a scratch in the back panel on the driver’s side. Big deal, you must be thinking, any decent repair or bodywork shop can polish out a scratch at very low cost, but the Jaguar XK8 has an aluminum shell, which required a costly adhesive to be used to fix the scratch and not allow further damage or warping of the car’s monocoque shell.
